The Alabama Sheriff’s Association, http://alabamasheriffs.com/, has made repeated attacks on our rights as Citizens of the Great State of Alabama. There is a bill, right now, ready to hit the floor of the Senate and the ASA is against it. They are in effect standing up to deny you your rights protected by our Constitution. I urge you to read for yourself what the bill, SB286, will do. You can view the synopsis here and find the whole bill to read
One of the Sheriffs complaints is may issue vs. shall issue. The map below shows where we are with other may issue states. Only the most liberal states hold to the unconstitutional “may issue” laws. Our liberal Sheriffs Association wants us to remain this way. Just look for yourself.
How do you like being in the same “boat” with Commiefornia and New York? I don’t like it one bit! However, the ASA evidently loves it. 39 states are shall issue with only 11 being may issue. Several of these states, have gone to shall issue in just the last few years. The ASA wants to keep these liberal, and unconstitutional, laws on our books. Why? They’ll even tell you SB286 denies their power to exercise discretion when issuing permits. This is a lie yet several sheriffs have said this in newspapers and on talk radio. The ASA tells us all 67 sheriffs are against this bill. Why? They want to keep their power over the people! I know of 2 people, personally, who were denied permits for a DUI. One for 3 years and another for 14 years! Both had clean records, except for these mistakes. Take a listen here and see how one sheriff uses his discretion.
This is not an isolated incident but it is a severe one. This sheriff is still drawing a paycheck.
Sheriff Mike Hale of Jefferson County said he needed to have this “discretion” so he could pull permits if a man was going through a divorce! I wonder how many deputies he’s put at a desk job when they were going through a divorce. I bet not one. But, it appears he wants that power over you.
Sheriff DT Marshall, of Montgomery, said SB286 would take us back to the “Wild West.” We should hope so!! Check the chart below and notice the homicide rate during the Wild West and also note where shall issue started being adopted by the states.
